As the year winds down and the Christmas break approaches, many of us will be spending more time on the road – heading away for holidays, visiting family, or juggling end-of-year commitments. It’s a busy and exciting time, but it’s also one of the most dangerous periods on our roads.

A little planning and patience can go a long way in keeping you and others safe.

Plan ahead and don’t rush
Give yourself extra time to get where you’re going. Holiday traffic, roadworks and weather can all slow things down. Rushing leads to poor decisions and no appointment or gathering is worth taking a risk for.

Rest before you drive
Fatigue is a major contributor to crashes, especially on longer trips. Make sure you’re well rested before getting behind the wheel and take breaks every couple of hours. If you feel tired, pull over. Even a short rest can make a big difference.

Drive to the conditions
Summer weather can be unpredictable. Heat, storms and glare from the sun can all affect visibility and concentration. Slow down when conditions change and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

Stay focused
Phones, passengers and festive distractions can easily take your attention away from the road. Keep your eyes up, your hands on the wheel and your focus where it belongs.

Never mix alcohol and driving
If you’re planning to drink, plan how you’ll get home safely. Use a designated driver, public transport or a rideshare. It’s a simple decision that can save lives.

Most importantly, remember why you’re on the road in the first place – to get to the people and places that matter to you. Let’s all do our part to make sure everyone gets home safely this Christmas.

On behalf of the team, I’d like to wish you a safe and happy holiday season, and all the best for the year ahead.
