On Tuesday, April 29, Independent Member of Parliament Hon Frank Pangallo MLC, with the support of the MTA, launched a public awareness campaign highlighting the importance of mandatory vehicle inspections.

Held outside the Adelaide Railway Station, the initiative invited commuters to respond to a simple question: “Can you pick a lemon?” Two identical vehicles were on display – one with over $10,000 in hidden repairs. Surprisingly, 60 per cent of participants selected the wrong car, highlighting just how difficult it can be for consumers to detect serious mechanical issues without a professional inspection.

The campaign reinforced the critical role vehicle inspections play in protecting South Australians from purchasing unsafe or unroadworthy vehicles.

Despite this, proposed legislation to introduce mandatory inspections has been put on hold. Premier Peter Malinauskas acknowledged the merit of the Bill but confirmed that the Government does not support it in its current form.

The MTA continues to advocate for reforms that improve consumer protection and road safety, and is actively pursuing discussions with the State Government to explore alternative legislative pathways.
