Industry News

The South Australian Government has finalised the framework and regulations that will allow personal mobility devices, like e-scooters, on public roads and footpaths.

Key Changes Coming Your Way (Effective July 13, 2025):

  • Footpaths, Beaches, and Shared Paths: You’ll be able to cruise along at a relaxed pace, with a maximum speed of 10km/h. This ensures safety for pedestrians and other path users.
  • Roads (60km/h zones): If you’re on an e-scooter, you’ll be able to travel up to 25km/h on roads with a speed limit of 60km/h or less.
  • Roads (50km/h zones): For other personal mobility devices (like e-skateboards), you can hit speeds of up to 25km/h on roads with a speed limit of 50km/h or less.

Important Rules to Remember:

Safety is paramount, and these rules are in place to protect everyone on our roads and paths:

  • Age Limit: You must be 16 years or older to operate any personal mobility device.
  • Helmet Up! A helmet is always required when operating one of these devices. No exceptions!
  • Stay Sober: Just like driving a car, it is strictly prohibited to operate a personal mobility device under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

We’re proud to have been a part of the conversation! The MTA participated in stakeholder roundtable discussions with the Government and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport. We provided valuable feedback and industry knowledge to help shape these new regulations, ensuring they are practical and consider the needs of all road users.
