Angle Grinders are used in many automotive workshops. When not used correctly, angle grinders pose a risk to the health and safety of workers. As a PCBU, it’s important to ensure there are adequate controls in place to safely manage the use of angle grinders in the workplace. This may include:
- Supplying angle grinders that have an automatic cut-off or “dead-man” switch. This means that power will cut off as soon as finger pressure is released which potentially could be the difference between a minor injury and a major injury. Automatic cut-off switches may not be available on all models and may not be practicable for certain tasks.
- Setting up a designated hot work area that is a suitable distance from flammable material, equipped with screens and has fire extinguishers readily available
- Ensuring that angle grinders are only operated by people competent in their use or if they are not competent, under the direct supervision of a competent operator.
- Assessing the scope of works requiring the use of an angle grinder and determining if a more suitable and potentially safer tool could be used.
- Enforcing the use of hearing protection and double eye protection – e.g safety glasses and a face shield
- Implement an SOP that requires equipment to be inspected prior to use and highlights operational requirements such as holding the angle grinder with two hands and securing work pieces where possible
October is National Safe Work Month – the perfect opportunity to commit to building a safe and healthy workplace. The theme of this year’s campaign is: For everyone’s safety, work safely. Angle grinder safety is just one of many areas that could be reviewed at in your workplace.
