Electric vehicles have continued their growing popularity in the Northern Territory, according to the latest sales statistics.
“Northern Territory electric vehicle sales have increased this year by 450 per cent,” Motor Trade Association CEO Darrell Jacobs said.
“Tesla commands its lead as the top EV brand in the Territory, but recent models released by BYD and other manufacturers are increasing competition in the race towards more affordable electric vehicles.”
The latest sales update comes as the announcement of the Federal Government’s proposed fuel efficiency standards looms large.
“A fuel efficiency standard will be the next big step towards the decarbonisation of transport,” he said.
The standard would follow announcements by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to move the date banning the sale of combustion cars to 2035 and the newly elected New Zealand Government axing the Clean Car Discount scheme, referred to by some as the ‘ute tax’.
“Territorians still love their utes and 4X4s and so I urge decision-makers not to forget the carrot in favour of the stick.”
Overall new car sales across the Northern Territory have grown, with 8,603 being purchased year to date compared to a corresponding 8,327 in 2022 – an increase of 3.3 per cent.
“This is good news for Territorians because after previous supply constraints dealerships have a range of cars available,” Mr Jacobs said.
