Apprentice News

As an apprentice at the MTA, understanding the importance of forklift safety is fundamental to your role in the workplace. Forklifts are indispensable yet high-risk machinery often associated with workplace incidents, injuries, and sadly, even fatalities.

To ensure safety, only individuals possessing a Forklift High-Risk Work Licence are permitted to operate forklifts. Additionally, workplaces must implement effective controls in line with Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) legislation to mitigate risks associated with these powerful machines.

How can we achieve forklift safety? Let’s take a look at the essential measures crucial for a safer work environment:

Operational Perspective:

  1. Purposeful Use: Use forklifts only for their designated purposes, as intended.
  2. Qualified Operators: Operators must hold a Forklift High-Risk Work Licence attained through proper training and assessment.
  3. Regular Maintenance: Ensure regular maintenance of forklifts with functioning audio and visual alarms.
  4. Compliance: Workers must adhere to traffic management plans and safe work procedures as part of their responsibility.
  5. Pre-start Inspection: Conduct a thorough inspection before using forklifts. Any identified defects compromising safety must be reported immediately.
  6. Load Management: Identify and ensure the weight of the load being lifted is within the forklift’s capacity and evenly distributed.
  7. Safe Operation: Drive with the tines lowered close to the ground, consider limiting speed, and maintain distance from overhead hazards like powerlines.

Reporting Incidents:

Any incident relating to forklifts must be reported to an appropriate person at the workplace, this allows incidents to be investigated and corrective actions implemented to prevent reoccurrence.  Depending on the nature and the severity of the incident, it may also need to be reported to SafeWork SA.  Guidance on what meets the criteria of a Notifiable Incident can be accessed from the SafeWork SA website.

Remember, the ultimate objective of workplace safety can be achieved when all parties fulfill their responsibilities.

Always prioritise safety. Your actions today ensure a safer tomorrow.
