Meet Mackenzie, a determined first-year apprentice training to become a Light Vehicle Mechanical Technician. His path to this point wasn’t without challenges.
“At the start of my apprenticeship in early 2023, I had a shoulder injury during football season that led to surgery,” Mackenzie said. “The MTA supported me during my recovery period until I received medical clearance. Now, I’m back at my Host Employer, Alltrac 4WD, specialising in 4×4 vehicles like Land Cruisers and Hi-lux’s.”
The welcoming environment at Alltrac 4WD, owned by brothers Mark and Brad, offered Mackenzie a supportive comeback. “They assured me my job would be there once I was better. They’ve been amazing mentors,” he said.
Reflecting on his interest in cars, Mackenzie shared a turning point: “I wasn’t always passionate about cars. It started when a BMW zipped past my Hyundai Tucson. This got me interested in understanding how engines worked. Before I knew it, it was 3:00 am, and I was deep into YouTube videos, learning about engines. “I kept pushing myself to learn more and more about cars. With my family’s support, I got the green light to pursue becoming a mechanic, leading me to where I am now.”
Considering the future of the automotive industry, Mackenzie sees a balance between electric vehicles (EVs) and traditional engines. “It’s great that I can learn about both at the MTA. I think classic cars will always have a special place. People who love cars will always like high-performance vehicles,” he said.
“In terms of my career goals, I aim to finish my apprenticeship. The place where I’m learning specialises in four-wheel drives, which are always popular in Australia because people enjoy off-road adventures, especially in the outback. Once I finish my apprenticeship, I hope to work with high-performance cars, maybe focusing on Porsches because I love that brand. One day, it would be great to have my own shop. I imagine a workshop where I can make cars that make people happy. Whether it’s a fast or slow car, if it brings joy to the owner and I’m the one building it, that’s what I want to do.”
“Apart from cars and the MTA, I focus a lot on my health by weightlifting and maintaining a good diet. I’m passionate about snow skiing. If I had all the money in the world, I’d live in a log cabin somewhere in the snow. Skiing all day and enjoying the peaceful environment is something I love. Spending time with family and friends is also important to me.”
Mackenzie’s story shows how determined he is. His ambitious goals and positive attitude indicate he’ll have a great future doing what he loves in the automotive industry!
