The automotive industry’s voice has been heard, leading to revisions in the New Vehicle Efficiency Standards (NVES).

Last week, the Federal Government proposed several enhancements to the NVES in parliament, largely due to the advocacy efforts of the Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA). Since the beginning, MTAA Chief Executive Officer Matt Hobbs, in addition to our own MTAA Chair, Frank Agostino have worked constructively with the government to highlight concerns and industry impacts around its original preferred model.

Notable improvements include:

  • Recognition that some utes, vans and 4WDs are more appropriately classified in the light commercial vehicle category
  • Adjusting the efficiency limits for trucks, vans and some 4WDs to more achievable settings
  • A later staging of the proposed penalty scheme to comment in mid-2025 rather than immediately at the start of 2025
  • Increased upper weight limits for both light commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles

MTAA CEO, Matt Hobbs said: “MTAA commends the Australian Government for their approach and appreciates the seat at the table throughout these critical discussions.
“The proposed standard is still very stringent in 2029, amongst the hardest in the world. It will still be very challenging for the majority of car brands in the Australian market to meet these targets.”

The Motor Trade Association SA/NT wishes to thank Matt Hobbs and Frank Agostino for their strong leadership and tireless efforts, along with our state and territory associations.
