SA electric vehicle sales accelerate

More electric vehicles were sold in the first half of this year in South Australia compared to all of 2022, according to new statistics.

“South Australian electric vehicle sales have increased this year by 350 per cent,” Motor Trade Association CEO Darrell Jacobs said.

“There is now more choice, more affordable models and electric vehicles with more range.

“We know the transition to EVs will not happen overnight but we are seeing sales significantly increase as new manufacturers and cars continue to enter the Australian market.”

Year to date 2,103 electric vehicles have been sold in South Australia, reflecting 5.5 per cent of all sales, compared to 1,426 across all of last year. Only 459 EVs were sold in the first six months of 2022.

The Tesla Model 3 has been South Australia’s most popular new EV, with 584 being sold this year.

Two Chinese brands recently unveiled Australia’s cheapest electric vehicles, priced under $40,000 for the first time.
Overall new car sales across South Australia have remained strong, with 37,676 being purchased across the first half of the year compared to a corresponding 35,131 in 2022.

“Local dealerships have new cars available for sale and used car prices also appear to be easing after previous supply constraints,” Mr Jacobs said.

“Despite growing EV popularity, South Australians still love their utes and 4X4’s.”
