MTA SA/NT CEO Darrell Jacobs joined SA Skills Commissioner, Cameron Baker, at Adelaide BMW to support an announcement about a crackdown on institutional training providers who deliver qualifications outside of formal apprenticeship agreements.
In 2024, over 4,000 qualifications declared as trade were commenced outside of apprenticeship agreements. Of these, around 500 were for automotive trades.
These training providers are not just disadvantaging learners, but they are cheating the automotive industry out of sorely needed skills we need for technicians to perform safely and competently in the workforce.
In response, the Commissioner has applied an amnesty until 30 January 2026 for new institutional enrolments for declared trades in South Australia with fines of up to $5,000 applicable thereafter.
The MTA welcomes this announcement from the SA Skills Commission as a positive step for our industry.
