South Australia’s new Occupational Recognition Service for Automotive Electricians is offering technicians the opportunity to gain official recognition for their expertise without the need for traditional training. This pathway provides a streamlined process for gaining trade recognition by showcasing your skills through practical assessments, rather than completing a qualification course.

Recently, Carter’s Mechanical Repairs, Adelaide City Jeep and Jarvis Group participated in a practical skills assessment, a key component of the program. Matthew Carter, from Carter’s Mechanical Repairs, shared his thoughts on the experience: “I run a small workshop with my father, and this training has been great for our team. It not only helps us get recognition for years of work but also allows us to build on a couple of extra skills we might need in the future.”

Lachlan Fotheringham, Skills & Facilities Manager at Automotive Skills & Careers, and Tynam Dean, Team Leader – Automotive, were on hand throughout the evaluation, providing guidance and ensuring that each participant was supported in showcasing their competence.

This pathway is ideal for experienced technicians who have been performing auto electrical duties but have not yet obtained formal qualifications. It provides an excellent opportunity to achieve dual-trade status for those already engaged in auto electrical repairs and diagnostics. Additionally, this process supports businesses in preparing for the integration of dual-trade apprentices or automotive electrical apprenticeships, enhancing workforce capability and industry readiness.

The application will need to be submitted through the South Australian Skills Commission, you can access this through the following link: Occupational Recognition Service – South Australian Skills Commission
