Over the last few months, SafeWork SA has been visiting automotive workshops in South Australia to audit the safety control measures in place for vehicle hoists and pressure vessels.
The MTA has been provided with the results of the visits and the summary of notices provided during the campaign.
SafeWork SA completed audits of 51 Businesses (PCBUs) throughout the campaign which resulted in 157 statutory notices being issued. These statutory notices included 11 prohibition notices and 146 improvement notices.
Prohibition Notices are issued to direct the cessation of any activity that creates an immediate risk to the health and safety of workers, visitors to the workplace, or members of the public.
Improvement Notices are issued to direct a person or organisation to undertake corrective action for an identified risk.
The campaign identified the following trends:
- Vehicle hoists are not being maintained to manufacturers’ specifications in the Regions
- Pressure Vessels are not being maintained to manufacturers’ specifications
- Pressure Vessels not having plant item registration in the Regions
- Vehicle hoists are not receiving their major 10-year inspection in the Metro Area
Members should take this campaign as a reminder of their obligations to register and maintain their plant and equipment as per the manufacturer’s specifications and relevant Australian Standards. In most cases, this includes:
Vehicle Hoists
- Daily Hoist checks
- Annual hoist servicing by an independent competent person
- 10 yearly major service by an independent competent person
- “Future life” inspection carried out after 25 years
Pressure Vessels (Air Compressors)
- Registration with SafeWork SA when hazard class equals A, B or C
- 2 yearly external inspection and 4 yearly internal inspection carried out by a competent person
- Daily visual checks
MTA members are encouraged to contact the Workplace Relations department who can provide information and assistance in complying with these obligations. Members can also purchase, at a substantially discounted price, daily hoist log books and holders from our Business Partner, Lane Communications who can be contacted at orders.mta@laneprint.com.au or on 8179 9907.
If you would like to get an overview of your WHS Management System and on-site safety compliance, the Workplace Relations department can carry out complete WHS site audits, which includes sections on vehicle hoists and pressure vessels, starting at the price of $890.
