Whether it’s working on massive trucks or perfecting the paintwork on vehicles, Sunny and Ebony’s experiences demonstrate the broad range of opportunities the automotive industry has to offer.
Meet Ebony, an MTA apprentice hosted at RMB Service Group, who is training to become an automotive refinishing technician.
Her journey into the trade was influenced by her grandfather, who was a panel beater and spray painter. Growing up, Ebony spent a lot of time with him in the shed, watching him work.
When her grandfather passed away just as she entered high school, Ebony’s connection to the trade deepened, especially when she got her first car. That’s when her creativity really came to life as she started experimenting with the cosmetic work on her own vehicle.
After high school, Ebony didn’t waste any time jumping into the automotive industry. She started at Wales and then made the move to Shanahan Crash Repairs, where she gained hands-on experience with cars, instead of just trucks.
Her favourite part of the job is the paintwork. For Ebony, spray painting is more than just a career choice—it’s who she is. After stepping away from the trade for a moment, she realised that this craft is part of her identity, and she’s back in the trade with a renewed sense of purpose.
Meet Sunny, an MTA apprentice training to become a Heavy Commercial Vehicle Technician, hosted at Moore Mechanical Truck & Trailer Repairs in Murray Bridge.
Growing up, Sunny was surrounded by Holden Kingswoods, Panel Vans and more. His weekends were spent in the shed with his dad, working on cars and enjoying cruises around Port Adelaide together. “Dad inspired me to work on cars. It’s something he loves, and I enjoy it too.”
Although Sunny started out working on cars, he soon discovered a new passion for trucks. “Everything is just bigger and better,” he says. “The engines are bigger, and the work is challenging, but in a way that’s exciting. I really enjoy it.”
At his host employer, Sunny feels right at home. “It’s been awesome. The team is always happy to have a chat, and I can ask anything I need to. Everyone’s looking out for each other while getting the job done. It’s a great atmosphere.”
The automotive industry is full of opportunities, and for Sunny, it’s more than just a career—it’s a community. “You meet so many people who share the same interests, from racing to hobbies to just talking about cars and trucks. It’s a great community to be a part of.”
Outside of work, Sunny stays active. He enjoys surfing, fishing, motorbikes, learning to skate, playing footy, and even cricket. “I just love anything that keeps me active all day.”
Looking ahead, Sunny is excited about what’s to come in his apprenticeship. “I’m looking forward to working on some amazing equipment and meeting new people along the way.”
